Serving Vaughan
Many of the people travelling in from Vaughan are older adults, or families booking for a parent after a fall. Balance responds to training at any age, provided the training is genuinely demanding rather than merely reassuring. Balance work in Vaughan is measured against published age norms at the first visit, so progress is something you can see.
Measuring first
The first appointment produces numbers rather than reassurance: how long a single leg stand lasts, how many chair stands in thirty seconds, walking speed over a set distance, and how much all of that degrades when you are asked to talk at the same time. Each one is compared against published figures for your age.
That comparison is the genuinely useful part of the appointment, because it separates ordinary ageing from a measurable deficit that is worth spending eight weeks training. See gait and balance training.
It also gives a family something concrete instead of an argument about whether a parent is managing. Four weeks later the same tests are repeated, and the answer is a number rather than an opinion from either side. More in older adults and falls and your first visit.
The programme
Chair stand, single leg stand, walking speed and a dual task condition, all compared with published figures rather than with how you felt that morning.
Balance work has to be genuinely challenging to produce an effect, with something to hold nearby. Comfortable balance work is mostly reassurance.
Sit to stand, step ups and calf work. Balance reflexes need strength to act on, and leg strength is usually the limiting factor.
Medication reviews, vision checks and home hazards all have good evidence. We raise them with you and your physician rather than treating around them.
For families
Families often make the first call, and that is fine, but the plan belongs to the person being treated. In practice that means they decide what they are working towards, whether it is the stairs, the shops or a garden, and we build backwards from that rather than from a general wish that they be safer.
The most common thing we have to talk a family out of is more caution. Reduced activity lowers capacity, and lower capacity genuinely raises the risk of the next fall. See older adults and falls.
Daytime appointments suit most older clients and travelling companions, and they are easier to get than early or late ones. Ask for a mid-morning slot and you will usually have the pick of the week. More in vertigo and balance and book an evaluation.
